Unit staffing returns are designed to enable local authorities, the Central Council for Training and Education in Social work and my Department to monitor trends in the deployment and movement of manpower between and within social service departments. These statistics have been sought only since 1975 and we have no plans to discontinue their collection at this stage, though it is necessary in all fields to check from time to time that the statistics collected are those most needed.
