HC Deb 15 December 1977 vol 941 cc327-8W
Mr. Sillars

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what is his latest estimate of the number of additional people coming on to the employment register in the forthcoming year when compared with the previous two years.

Mr. Millan

Provisional estimates of the labour force in Scotland indicate an increase of approximately 24,000 between June 1975 and June 1976 and 16,000 between June 1976 and June 1977. The increase in the year to June 1978 is projected to be similar to the 1976–77 figure. Any projection is, however, subject to uncertainty, the outcome being affected by such factors as migration trends and the proportion of the population—particularly married women—who seek to enter the labour force.
