HC Deb 15 December 1977 vol 941 c379W
Sir D. Walker-Smith

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food whether he has sufficient experience of the operation of the EEC directive on the protection of animals during international transport to make an assessment of the adequacy thereof; and whether he is satisfied as to the enforceability of its provisions.

Mr. Strang

This directive, which was issued on 18th July 1977, does not take effect until 1st August 1978. The directive is, however, based on the Council of Europe Convention for the Protection of Animals in International Transport which has been in force in most EEC countries since 1974. The study of the livestock export trade which is now in progress will include an assessment of the adequacy of these measures.
