HC Deb 14 December 1977 vol 941 c270W
30. Mr. Beith

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what is his definition of the principal criteria for public subsidy of uneconomic rail services.

Mr. William Rodgers

Exchequer subsidy is given to the railway passenger system as a whole, not to individual services.

35. Mr. Ovenden

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what increase in Government subsidy would be necessary to limit British Rail fare increases to 10 per cent.; and what subsidy increase would be required to limit increases for south-eastern commuters to the overall fare increase of 14 per cent.

Mr. William Rodgers

About £15 million and £3 million a year, respectively.
