asked the Secretary of State for Transport what proposals he has received for investment in the modernising of British Railways freight handling.

In August I approved rolling investment programmes for new freight locomotives and wagons. No proposal is before me at the present time.

64. Mr. Whitehead

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what proposals he has to expedite the movement of rail freight through United Kingdom ports.

I have asked the Railways Board to initiate proposals for improving present procedures. I welcome the recent appointment by the Board of a European Rail Traffic Manager whose tasks will include improving the through transit of freight.
