HC Deb 14 December 1977 vol 941 cc273-4W
49. Mr. Forman

asked the Secretary of State for Transport whether his Department gives any assistance or advice to local authorities which may be considering the introduction of a network of cycle routes, especially in London; and whether he will make a statement about the Government's policy with regard to the safety of cyclists.

63. Mr. Douglas-Mann

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what guidance he has issued to local authorities to encourage the provision of bicycle routes in city areas.

Mr. Horam

The Government's policy for making conditions safer and more pleasant for cyclists is given in the Transport White Paper Cmnd. 6836 (paragraphs 128–9).

As stated in the White Paper, advice, through the regional offices and Traffic Advisory Unit, is available to all local authorities, including the GLC, which may be considering the introduction of cycle schemes. Financial assistance is also available to selected schemes of an experimental or innovatory nature. General advice currently available to local authorities is contained in the Traffic Advisory Unit's Traffex 1975 publication, which is available from the Department on request. This will shortly be superseded by a more comprehensive and up-to-date advice note which my right hon. Friend hopes to publish in the New Year.
