HC Deb 13 December 1977 vol 941 c176W
22. Mr. David Hunt

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what steps are being taken to reduce unemployment among young people in the Wirral.

Mr. Golding

Young people in the Wirral, as elsewhere, have benefited from the various special measures the Government have introduced since 1975 to alleviate unemployment. Under the job creation scheme 104 projects have been approved providing 1,438 jobs of which about half have been taken up by young people; 35 schemes have been supported under the work experience programme with 99 young people participating; the employment of 498 young people has been assisted under the youth employment subsidy; and 52 training places exclusively for young people are currently being provided by the Training Services Agency on short industrial courses.

My right hon. Friend announced on 29th June a new youth opportunities programme which will offer a range of opportunities for training and work experience which can be adapted to individual needs. Resources are to be allocated between areas in proportion to the level of youth unemployment.
