HC Deb 13 December 1977 vol 941 c195W
Mr. Frank Maguire

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what is the strength of the Ulster Defence Regiment; how many of those who have served in it have been convicted of terrorist-type offences; and how many have been dismissed from the service since it was formed for criminal activities.

Mr. Robert C. Brown

The strength of the Ulster Defence Regiment at 31st October 1977 was 7,801.

Since 1972 approximately 30 members of the UDR have been convicted of terrorist type offences while serving. No figures are available for conviction of individuals who were no longer members of the regiment at the time the offence was committed.

It is not possible in the time available to extract the figures on dismissals.
