Mr. Holland

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if she will list the major projects carried out during the last six months by (a) the Medical Research Council, (b) the Natural Environment Research Council, (c) the Science Research Council, and (d) the Social Science Research Council.

Major projects are seldom if ever completed within a period of six months. Each Council will be publishing a full account of its activities since 1st April in its annual report for 1977–78.

On the day of the census, school dinners were taken by 70.5 per cent. of all pupils present in primary schools—77.2 per cent. last year—and by 50.3 per cent. in secondary schools—59 per cent. last year.

The census also collected information about pupils (a) purchasing snack meals in school and (b) bringing their own food to eat at midday. The respective numbers were 27,000 and 1,025,000 compared with 47,000 and 609,000 last year. Nine out of 10 snack meals were purchased in secondary schools and 17 per cent. of secondary pupils brought their
