HC Deb 13 December 1977 vol 941 cc184-5W
49. Mr. David Price

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what he regards as the minimum wage level required to satisfy the basic needs of an employee and his family; how many wage earners were at the latest convenient date earning less than this minimum wage level and how many earning more; and how many were earning more than 50 per cent. of the minimum wage level.

Mr. Harold Walker

The basic needs of a family vary according to its particular circumstances, including its size, the age of the children and cost of living accommodation. These factors also help to determine a family's net income because of variations in tax paid and benefits received. It is, therefore, not possible to specify a single minimum wage level as requested by the hon. Member.
