asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what would be the saving in 1978–79 if the upper earnings limit on social security contributions were abolished.

There would be a saving of about –370 million on the assumptions used in the Government Actuary's report on the 1978–79 contribution rates (Cmnd. 7036).
