HC Deb 13 December 1977 vol 941 cc186-7W
47. Mr. Hardy

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many persons were in employment in England and Wales at the latest available date and four years earlier.

Mr. Golding

At June 1977 there were 20,036,000 employees in employment in England and Wales compared with 20,132,000 in June 1973. The figure for June 1977 is provisional.

Mr. Gwynfor Evans

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what percentage of persons over 15 years of age are employed in England, Scotland and Wales, respectively.

Mr. Golding

Since most people in employment are aged 16 years and over the figures have been related to the population aged 16 years and over. The data relate to June 1976, the latest year for which figures are available. In England 59 per cent. of those aged 16 and over were employed. The corresponding figures for Scotland and Wales are 58 per cent. and 53 per cent. respectively.
