I understand from my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Social Services that the grants given by his Department for kidney research in the financial year 1976–7 amounted to £122,000. The institutions which benefited were:

London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.
Atomic Weapons Research Establishment, Aldermaston.
Southmead Hospital, Bristol.

In addition, his Department spent £161,000 on kidney transplantation research. The institutions which benefited were:

St. Mary's Hospital, Portsmouth.
Churchill Hospital, Oxford.

In the same financial year, spending by the Medical Research Council on all kidney research, including work on the urinary tract, amounted to £376,000. The Council also supports a wide range of research relevant to the kidney, including basic research in such fields as immunology. When this is taken into account, the Council's expenditure in 89W 1976–7 on all aspects of kidney research is estimated at about £1.875 million including an estimated £264,000 on aspects of kidney research relevant to transplantation.

Information about expenditure by the Department of Health and Social Security and the Medical Research Council is not readily available for the years before 1976–7.
