HC Deb 12 December 1977 vol 941 cc86-7W
Mr. Spearing

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he will set out the table published in the Official Report, 26th October, columns 833–4 with figures for the latest convenient date together with appropriate wholesale CIF prices for a United Kingdom or near continental port.

Mr. Bishop

The following is the information requested applicable on 6th December 1977:

monetary compensatory amounts are fixed in sterling. The net cost to the importer is the common levy less the accession compensatory amount and less the monetary compensatory amount.

In the Overseas Trade Accounts import values are quoted "cif"—cost, insurance, freight—and not on a wholesale price basis. The following figures, which are the latest ones available, are the average unit values of all imports from third countries recorded during October 1977 and these were calculated by dividing the total import values by the total import quantity of each commodity.

Item Average unit values of imports from third countries during October 1977 £1100 kg
Common wheat 7.053
Barley 8.400
Maize 5.832
White sugar *
Butter 91†
Cheddar cheese 79†
Skimmed milk powder *
Boneless frozen beef 112.81
Lard 29
Remainder *
* No significant quantities imported.
† Imports mainly from New Zealand under ecial EEC arrangements.

Imports from some third countries are subject to special arrangements made under Lome, GATT and other agreements. Levies, therefore, are not necessarily additive to average unit values.
