HC Deb 09 December 1977 vol 940 cc922-3W
Mr. Sillars

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is his estimate of the total value of mortgages taken out by people in each separate region of the United Kingdom or in each part of the United Kingdom for which separate figures are available.

Mr. Denzil Davies

Details of outstanding mortgage debt are not available on a regional basis. However, the total value of mortgage assets of building societies in the United Kingdom at the end of 1976 was £22,529 million of which £1,228 million relates to Scotland.

Mr. Sillars

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he is able to estimate the total number and value of new mortgages
