HC Deb 09 December 1977 vol 940 cc912-3W
Mr. Pavitt

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will publish in the Official Report the names of any medicines which appear on the list of those obtainable by prescription only adopted by the Council of Europe but which are not so restricted in the United Kingdom.

Mr. Moyle

Following extensive consultations, an order under the Medicines Act 1968 specifying the products which may only be sold or supplied against a prescription will soon be laid before Parliament with an operative date of 1st February 1978. The order has been prepared in the light of the recommendations of the Council of Europe on the classification of medicines obtainable only on prescription, but it does not include all the substances listed in the recommendations—e.g., a considerable number which are not marketed in the United Kingdom and a few which are subject to other controls are excluded.
