HC Deb 09 December 1977 vol 940 c914W
Mr. Hannam

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what would be the net cost of increasing invalid care allowance to £17.50 per week for present beneficiaries.

Mr. Alfred Morris

The gross cost, assuming that the increase for a wife or other adult dependant remained unchanged, would be about £2 million a year. It is not possible to give a reliable estimate of the net cost, but there would probably be significant savings on supplementary benefit.

Mr. Hannam

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what would be the net cost of paying invalid care allowance at the present rate to married women.

Mr. Alfred Morris

I refer the hon. Member to my right hon. Friend's reply to the right hon. Member for Redbridge, Wanstead and Woodford (Mr. Jenkin) on 8th December 1977.

Mr. Hannam

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what would be the net cost of paying invalid care allowance at £17.50 per week to both present beneficiaries and to married women.

Mr. Alfred Morris

It is not possible to give a reliable estimate, but the gross cost might be as much as £114 million.
