HC Deb 09 December 1977 vol 940 cc909-10W
Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for Transport whether he will give for the longest most convenient stated period of time, up to and including 3rd November 1977, the number of complaints received by him and the Swansea Driver and Vehicle Licensing Centre on its alleged maladministration and neglect; how many of these complaints were from Members of Parliament and other public representatives; and what recent action he has taken, or intends taking, to improve the service given by this office.

Mr. Horam

I have already explained to my hon. Friend in previous answers and correspondence that no separate record is kept of complaints, as distinct from inquiries, from the public concerning driver and vehicle licensing. Hon. Members raised 505 individual cases during the four months July to October 1977. In the same period the Swansea Centre dealt with over 19 million applications of all kinds. This puts the number of complaints into perspective. Even so, the centre is doing everything possible to reduce the causes of legitimate complaints.
