HC Deb 08 December 1977 vol 940 c832W
Mr. Sillars

asked the Secretary of State for Industry if he will list the Scottish shipyards in public and private ownership, respectively, which are able to construct North Sea oil supply ships; if he will show against each yard the largest ships it is able to build; and what is the number of people employed.

Mr. Les Huckfield

All Scottish shipyards in public ownership are capable of constructing North Sea oil supply ships. The hon. Member should ask British Shipbuilders which would be most suitable for a particular requirement. Which yards in private ownership could do so is a matter for the managements concerned. The maximum size of vessel which can be constructed in particular yards is recorded in the Directory of Shipowners, Shipbuilders and Marine Engineer.

I am not in a position to disclose employment in individual yards and the hon. Member should ask British Shipbuilders and the managements of yards in private ownership for this information.
