Mr. Sillars

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what has been Government expenditure on motorway building in Scotland in each of the past five years.

Mr. McElhone

Expenditure on new construction of trunk road motorways in Scotland in each of the past five years was as follows:

Mr. Sillars

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what was the last stretch of motorways to be built in Scotland; what was the date of completion; and was was the average cost per mile at both cost and 1977 prices.

The Muirmont to Moncrieffe Hill section of M90, which was brought fully into use on 29th November 1977. On a current estimate of total expenditure the outlay per mile at cost and 1977 prices would be £3.96 million and £4.19 million respectively.

Mr. Sillars

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what plans he has over the next five years for road improvements on the A75 between Stranraer and Dumfries and on the A77 from Ayr to Stranraer.

Subject to the availability of funds at the time, and the completion of statutory and other procedures, the major trunk road improvement schemes which it is hoped to start on these routes in the next five years are:

A75 Stranraer-Dumfries

  • Replacement of Shennanton Bridge and associated roadworks
  • Carsluith Diversion
  • Muil to Ardachie
  • Replacement of Threave Bridge and associated roadworks
  • Creetown Bypass.

A77 Ayr-Stranraer

  • Bridgemill Improvement
  • Black Glen to Maybole.
