Mr. Clemitson

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what proportion of the beds available for psychiatric patients in the National Health Service were in units in general hospitals in each of the last 10 years for which figures are available.

The proportion of mental illness beds which were in general hospital psychiatric units was as follows in the years in question:

In 1976 the average daily number of available beds was 27.1 and the occupancy rate 35 per cent.

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what is the size of the waiting list for treatment at the ENT section of the Royal Gloucestershire Hospital, Gloucester; and what was the size of the list 12 months ago.

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what is the present estimated waiting time for patients seeking non-urgent ENT treatment at the Royal Gloucestershire Hospital, Gloucester.

Mr. Moyle

Waiting time for a non-urgent ENT out-patient appointment varies from 12 to 34 weeks depending on which consultant the case is referred to. Once on the waiting list for admission as an in-patient for non-urgent treatment, a number of factors will determine the date of admission, such as the number of emergency and urgent cases that present themselves, the type of treatment required and the size of the waiting list of the particular consultant. Waiting time for admission for ENT treatment may be up to 18–20 months.

  • ear, nose and throat

  • ophthalmology
  • dental surgery
  • gynaecology
  • obstetrics
  • special care baby unit
  • GP maternity.

Additionally out-patient clinics are held in the following specialties:

  • rheumatology
  • radiotherapy
  • plastic surgery
  • thoracic surgery
  • orthodontics
  • neurosurgery
  • child osychiatry
  • mental handicap
  • mental illness
  • sexually transmitted diseases

Mr. Watkinson

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will now publish the size of waiting lists for the various non-urgent forms of treatment at the Royal Gloucestershire Hospital.

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if there are any plans to expand the ENT sections of the Royal Gloucestershire Hospital.

A new ENT out-patient department is proposed for phase IVB of the Gloucestershire Royal Hospital which it is hoped to start in 1980–81.
