Mr. Edwin Wainwright

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what was the weekly average salary paid to policemen in each of the past five years; and what are the comparable figures for men working in the manufacturing industries.

New Earnings Survey estimates for April each year of average gross weekly earnings of policemen—below the rank of sergeant—and men in manual, non-manual and all occupations in manufacturing industries who were aged 21 and over and whose pay for the survey reference pay period was not affected by absence were:

Information for those over 58 years of age is not available. Except for Northern Ireland, for which the figures relate to the count made on 9th June, the information is for 14th July.
