HC Deb 08 December 1977 vol 940 c836W
Mr. Sillars

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what is his estimate in the last available full year of the percentage of Scottish school pupils who went on to take full-time courses of education in central institutions and universities, respectively.

Mr. McElhone

It is provisionally estimated that 1.7 per cent. of pupils leaving school during 1975–76 entered full-time advanced courses at central institutions in session 1976–77 and 7.6 per cent. entered universities. Of leavers holding normal minimum entry qualifications for higher education—three or more higher grade passes—11 per cent. entered full-time advanced courses at central institutions and 49 per cent. entered universities. In addition, about 17 per cent. of qualified leavers entered full-time advanced courses at local authority further education colleges.
