HC Deb 08 December 1977 vol 940 c844W
Mr. Gordon Wilson

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many representations were made by him in 1975 and 1976 to magistrates and judges for remission of fines; how many magistrates and judges agreed to allow fines to be remitted; and what were the total fines not collected in this manner in each year.

Mr. Harry Ewing

In 1975, 218 sheriffs and justices were consulted about proposals to remit fines outstanding to borstal inmates. In response, 191 expressed no objection or agreed with the proposal, and remission was granted in 176 cases. Fines amounting to £5,669 were remitted. The corresponding figures for 1976 were 239, 208, 188 and £6,404.
