§ Mr. Sillarsasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is the value to Scottish and English taxpayers, respectively, of tax relief on mortgage interest rates; and what is the value expressed per head of total populations of each country.
§ Mr. Robert SheldonThe total tax relief on mortgage interest in Scotland and England for 1977–78 is estimated at £45 million and £970 million respectively. This takes into account the recent reduction in the rates charged by building societies but assumes that rates do not change again thereafter.
Using the latest population estimates available, for June 1976, the average relief per head of the total population 790W in 1977–78 is £8.60 in Scotland and £20.90 in England.
