HC Deb 07 December 1977 vol 940 cc789-90W
Mr. Sillars

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is the value to Scottish and English taxpayers, respectively, of tax relief on mortgage interest rates; and what is the value expressed per head of total populations of each country.

Mr. Robert Sheldon

The total tax relief on mortgage interest in Scotland and England for 1977–78 is estimated at £45 million and £970 million respectively. This takes into account the recent reduction in the rates charged by building societies but assumes that rates do not change again thereafter.

Using the latest population estimates available, for June 1976, the average relief per head of the total population in 1977–78 is £8.60 in Scotland and £20.90 in England.
