HL Deb 06 December 1977 vol 387 c1604WA
Lord AVEBURY

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they have taken into account the tension between Honduras and El Salvador and the possibility that hostilities could break out between the two countries, in permitting the sale of £850,000's worth of armoured personnel carriers to the army of El Salvador; if in the light of these risks they would reconsider the transaction; and in any case if they will make delivery conditional on an undertaking by El Salvador that in future it will not support the illegal claim of Guatemala to the territory of Belize.

Lord GORONWY-ROBERTS

These considerations have been taken into account in regard to this contract. Assurances have been sought from the Government of El Salvador that in no circumstances will the equipment be used against Belize.
