HC Deb 05 December 1977 vol 940 c502W
Mrs. Wise

asked the Secretary of State for Transport how many hazardous substances, involving special safety information and precautions, are transported by road; and what is the average number of journeys per year or per month.

Mr. Horam

About 400 hazardous chemicals are subject to legislation requiring special safety information and precautions when transported by road.

I am not in a position to provide up-to-date information on the average number of journeys involving the carriage of hazardous chemicals, but on the basis of a survey undertaken a few years ago it is estimated that there are approximately 3 million tanker journeys per year on the roads in Great Britain.
