(a) Figures in column (1) are taken from the New Earnings Survey figures published in the Department of Employment Gazette. These are available for April each year only.
(b) The rates for private and sergeant quoted are those of the grades containing the largest numbers—that is Private II, Scale C, Band 1; and a Sergeant, Scale C, Band 5—with 12 years service, except that the 1973 figure for sergeant is for Band 2 under the old grading structure replaced in 1974. The rate taken for Lieutenant is the mid-point of the incremental scale.
