§ Mr. Lomasasked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what consideration has been given to the effect the dumping of nuclear waste in the sea will have on marine life.
§ Mr. StrangThe Government comply with the criteria specified by the International Atomic Energy Agency as covered by the London Convention in permitting dumping of radioactive wastes in the sea. The annual dumping of medium and low-level wastes from this country takes place in accordance also with the procedures of the Nuclear Energy Agency of OECD. Dumping is carried out in a site off the Atlantic shelf in waters some 4,000 metres in depth with no effect upon marine life.
