Mr. Corbett

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food when the Food Standards Committee started its review of the labelling laws; what are the terms of reference of the review; what organisations have been invited to give evidence; and when its report is expected.

Mr. Strang

The Food Standards Committee review of food labelling was announced on 16th January 1975. The terms of reference areto review the labelling and advertising of food with reference to the provisions of the current Regulations and of proposals for the harmonisation of legislation of Member States of the European Communities, and to make recommendations.

Evidence was requested from all those with an interest in food labelling and has been received from over 150 organisations. Publication of the full report is expected in late 1978.

The Committee's views on the change from calorie to joule in food energy declaration and on the use of fructose in foods specially prepared for diabetics have been published and circulated to interested parties.

Other important aspects of labelling may also be made available in advance of publication of the full report.
