asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland whether he will make a statement on applications made to the Irish Republic for extradition of those accused in terrorist and other cases, respectively, since the coming into force of criminal jurisdiction legislation in the two countries; and what use the Crown has made of that legislation.

Mr. Mason

The Criminal Jurisdiction Act 1975 and the corresponding Irish legislation apply only to certain offences committed after 1st June 1976. This legislation was introduced because of shortcomings in the arrangements for recovering fugitive offenders between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. I understand that the RUC will make use of the criminal jurisdiction legislation where it is appropriate, and
