HC Deb 26 April 1977 vol 930 c291W
Mr. Lomas

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what is the estimated cost of repairing a broken leg in the National Health Service.

Mr. Moyle

The cost of treating specified injuries or diseases cannot be identified from the cost accounts of NHS authorities. The average length of stay for hospital in-patients with fractures of the lower limb varies between 7.6 and 48.9 days depending upon the site and nature of the injury. At the average costs in large acute hospitals in England in 1975–76 this would suggest a cost per case ranging between £200 and £1,500 for in-patient treatment only. Costs of other forms of treatment cannot be estimated.
