§ Mr. Craigenasked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many buildings he has added to the list of buildings of special or historical interest in Scotland in each of the past five years and of that number how many were in Glasgow; and what financial assistance the Scottish Development Department gave during this period towards repairs of listed buildings in Scotland.
§ Mr. McElhoneThe numbers of items added to the statutory list for Scotland, and for Glasgow in particular, are set out below:
Scotland Glasgow *1972 2,874 — 1973 218 3 1974 405 12 1975 114 10 1976 258 — 1977 (Jan-Mar) 76 57 * The 2,874 items now statutorily listed were shown previously in a provisional non-statutory list. Glasgow was not involved, as a statutory list had been prepared for the local authority and no conversion of their provisional to statutory listing was required. On the recommendation of the Historic Buildings Council for Scotland, in the same period grants have been awarded 206W totalling £2,006,000 for repairs to listed buildings of outstanding architectural and historic interest and also grants totalling £372,000 for the enhancement of outstanding conservation areas; a substantial part of the latter has gone towards the repair of listed buildings.
In addition, from the package of measures to help the construction industry, £120,000 was made available by the Government in 1976–77 to Glasgow District Council for the repair of listed buildings in Glasgow. Glasgow District Council has made representations to the Secretary of State about listing in Glasgow and my hon. Friend will receive a copy of the reply.
