Miss Fookes

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, what regulations govern the welfare of farm animals being transported by sea.

Mr. Strang

The welfare of farm animals transported by sea to or from ports in Great Britain is safeguarded by a number of orders made, or deemed to have been made, under the Diseases of Animals Act 1950. These orders include the Transit of Animals Order 1927, the Animals (Sea Transport) Order 1930, the Exported Animals Protection Order 1964 and the Transit of Animals (General) Order 1973.

Miss Fookes

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if United Kingdom regulations govern foreign vessels transporting farm animals from or to a United Kingdom port.

Mr. Strang

Yes.

Miss Fookes

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if any provision exists for the reporting of numbers of animals injured during a voyage to or from a United Kingdom port.

Mr. Strang

Yes. This is required by Article 2 of the Animals (Sea Transport) Order 1930 and Article 3 of the Transit of Animals Order 1927, and by similar legislation for Northern Ireland.
