§ Mr. Woodasked the Secretary of State for Social Services (1) on how many occasions the freedom of doctors to prescribe appliances, previously provided for the benefit of disabled people, has been removed; what was the nature of these appliances and the reason for the removal; and what alternative provisions were offered in their place;
(2) whether he will guarantee the continued provision of wheelchairs, prostheses and other appliances for those who at present qualify for them.
§ Mr. Alfred MorrisMedical and surgical appliances required for the treatment of patients, including disabled people, have been prescribed in much the same way from the beginning of the National Health Service. My right hon. Friend has no plans to interfere with doctors' freedom to prescribe; and we intend to continue the provision of wheelchairs, prostheses and other appliances.
