Mr. Tom McMillan

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what proposals he has received from the British Railways Board on reduction of railway staff; and if he will make a statement.

None, although in response to the consultation document the Board set out ways in which staff numbers might be reduced by around 40,000 by 1981. I understand that the Board is working towards this target and is in consultation with the trade unions.
