HC Deb 07 April 1977 vol 929 c631W
Sir A. Broughton

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether, since the sixteenth issue of National Savings certificates was withdrawn from sale on 31st March and the fifteenth issue can be purchased only by people of retirement age, he will now allow an individual to hold more than 1,000 certificates of the fourteenth and earlier issues, in order to encourage saving.

Mr. Robert Sheldon

The Government feel that it would be inappropriate at present to raise the maximum holdings of 14th Issue National Savings certificates in view of the tax exemption which they enjoy. The Department for National Savings provides other facilities for sums over £1,000.
