HC Deb 07 April 1977 vol 929 c630W
Mr. Carter-Jones

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what action he will take to alleviate the hardship which will be caused to disabled drivers and retirement pensioners by his increase in fuel tax and the road fund licences.

Mr. Robert Sheldon

I note my hon. Friend's concern. However, the Government are statutorily committed to uprate most social security benefits at least in line with prices. This will protect these benefits from the effect of indirect tax increases on the general price level. Mobility allowance is also to be uprated at the next general uprating of benefits.
