§ Mr. Edgeasked the Secretary of State for Transport if, in view of the growing number of accidents to people engaged in servicing their own cars, he will set up an inquiry into the safety of car jacks.
§ Mr. HoramI understand that the British Standards Institute is about to consult interested bodies on standards to be applied to car jacks, and that it is supported in this initiative by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Motor Traders. It is hoped to publish the new standards later this year, and in these circumstances I do not think an inquiry on my part into the safety of jacks is needed. It must, however, be borne in mind that accidents to people servicing their own cars result not infrequently from lack of precaution in the use of jacks, rather than from any basic failure in them.
