HC Deb 04 April 1977 vol 929 cc366-7W
Mr. Craigen

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what is the estimated cost of administering the system of parental means test in determining student grants.

Mr. Oakes

About £2 million.

Dr. Hampson

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what proportion of the 13,000 home students on first degree and comparable courses who receive no grant would be entitled to a minimum grant but do not make an application.

Mr. Oakes

I regret that this information is not available.

Dr. Hampson

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many students in Great Britain in the academic year 1975–76 were in receipt of minimum awards; and what is her estimate of the additional cost of paying tuition fees of these students in addition to their £50 minimum grant (a) at current rates and (b) at the new rates proposed for academic year 1977–78.

Mr. Oakes

About 17,000 students with mandatory awards; the estimated costs of tuition and other approved fees are (a) £4 million for 1976–77 and (b) £10 million for 1977–78.

Dr. Hampson

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many students there are on degree courses who are not entitled to a mandatory award because they have already received an award for a comparable course.

Mr. Oakes

I regret this information is not available.
