§ Mr. FreesonThe Secretary of State has received representations in one such case. It is, however, not a matter on which he can intervene. Section 85 of the Local Government Act 1972 gives an authority power to approve in advance the absence of a member. I am sure that local authorities exercise their discretion responsibly, and I see no need for a review of the procedure.
