§ Mr. Onslowasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will make a further statement of his policy of promoting national savings part of a campaign against inflation in the light of the decision to withdraw all Civil Service staff support from the voluntary savings movement.
§ Mr. Denzil DaviesThe major part in the promotion of National Savings is played by the Department for National Savings and the Trustee Savings Banks. This is usefully supplemented by the efforts of the voluntary movement and we hope they will be able to continue to play a part when the official staff support is withdrawn. How far this will be possible is one of the questions currently being studied by a steering group of the National Savings Committee. When the steering group has reported we shall be 207W glad to discuss with the voluntary movement what its future role should be and and to consider what Government support would be appropriate.
