asked Her Majesty's Government:

How many of the total adult prison population (excluding any in borstals, detention centres or remand centres) were in open, and how many in closed, establishments (at the latest available date); whether there were any vacancies; and, if so, how many in open adult prisons.

Lord HARRIS of GREENWICH

On 30th September (the latest date for which information is available) 26,165 adults were in closed prisons, and 3,494 in open prisons. On the same date vacancies in open prisons were 122 (male) and 49 (female).
