HC Deb 21 October 1976 vol 917 cc523-4W
Mr. Stephen Ross

asked the Secretary of State for Trade whether, since 1st January 1976, imports under the Customs tariff heading "Whalebone and the like" are recorded separately in the statistics in relation to the controlled "Whalebone" and the uncontrolled and the like.

Mr. Meacher

No. "Whalebone and the like" is included with "horns, antlers, hooves, nails, claws and beaks of animals" in tariff heading 05.09 and figures are only compiled for this heading as a whole.

Mr. Stephen Ross

asked the Secretary of State for Trade why, prior to 1st January 1976, "Whalebone and the like" were restricted imports by virtue of his open general import licence, but since that date only "whalebone" has been restricted.

Mr. Marks

I have been asked to reply.

The phrase "and the like" had no significance in relation to the control of whale products prior to 1st January 1976 and was, therefore, not used in specifying the list of goods controlled after that date.
