HC Deb 21 October 1976 vol 917 c538W
Mr. Brocklebank-Fowler

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what compensation has been paid by the Portuguese Government to British citizens who lost agricultural land during the recent revolution in Portugal.

Dr. Owen

No compensation has yet been paid. The Portuguese Government, however, publicly pledged themselves on 21st September to ensure that foreigners whose agricultural properties have been occupied either receive compensation negotiated by agreement or have their properties returned to them. Her Majesty's Government have made it clear to the Portuguese authorities that they expect compensation to British farmers to be prompt, adequate and effective.

Mr. Brocklebank-Fowler

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what acreage of land in Portugal belonging to British citizens has been requisitioned.

Dr. Owen

According to the information available to Her Majesty's Embassy, Lisbon, 4,800 acres have been the subject of formal expropriation. In addition British owners and tenants have been dispossessed of a further 14,700 acres not formally expropriated.

Mr. Brocklebank-Fowler

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs how many British subjects have been evicted from their land in Portugal.

Dr. Owen

Eight British farmers have been dispossessed of the land they owned or rented.
