HC Deb 18 October 1976 vol 917 cc299-300W
Mr. Hatton

asked the Secretary of State for Employment (1) how many young people who left school in the summer of 1976 in Manchester are still unemployed;

(2) how many young people were unemployed in Manchester at the latest available date; and how these figures compare with 1974 and 1975.

Mr. Golding

On 9th September there were 1,592 school leavers under age 18 registered as unemployed in the Metropolitan District of Manchester. The statistics do not distinguish between the different dates of leaving school but the majority left on or after 28th May this year.

The latest unemployment statistics analysed by age were collected on 8th July. The number of young people under age 20 unemployed at that time, and the comparative figures for July 1975 and July 1974 were as follows:

METROPOLITAN DISTRICT OF MANCHESTER
Age group July 1976 July 1975 July 1974
16 and 17 3,732 981 557
18 and 19 1,343 1,567 965
