HC Deb 18 October 1976 vol 917 c359W
Mr. Gorst

asked the Secretary of State for Trade how many bankruptcies there were during the first nine months of 1976; and how these figures compare with those of the previous three years.

Mr. Clinton Davis

The numbers of bankruptcies in the United Kingdom during the first nine months of the relevant years are as follows:

1973 2,847
1974 4,063
1975 5,513
1976 5,349

The figures are totals of receiving orders and administration orders in England and Wales, sequestration orders in Scotland, and adjudication orders, protection orders and administration orders in Northern Ireland, made in the periods. These three sets of figures are broadly comparable.
