HC Deb 22 November 1976 vol 919 c965W
Mr. Anthony Grant

asked the Secretary of State for Trade if he will set out in the Official Report the powers he has to ban the import into the United Kingdom of manufactured articles or produce made from or containing any part of any whale, dolphin or porpoise or sperm oil, spermaceti wax and ambergris.

Mr. Meacher

I have powers under the Import, Export and Customs Powers (Defence) Act 1939 to prohibit or regulate the import of goods into the United Kingdom. In the light of advice from my right hon. Friend the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food I have not exercised these powers to restrict imports of the particular products referred to by the hon. Member. Imports into the United Kingdom of other primary whale products are however restricted.
