HC Deb 22 November 1976 vol 919 cc942-3W
Mr. McCusker

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland how many applications were received for membership of (a) the RUC and (b) the RUC(R) between 1st January 1976 and 30th June 1976; and how many were successful in each category.

Mr. Dunn

I am informed that between 1st January and 30th June 1976, 1,470 applications were received for the RUC and 2,233 for the RUC(R). It is not possible, without disproportionate effort, to say how many of these particular applications were successful, but during the same period 320 recruits were accepted for the RUC and 558 for the RUC(R).

Mr. McCusker

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what proportion of the membership of the RUC is Roman Catholic; and what proportion of applications received between 1st January and 30th June 1976 were from Roman Catholics.

Mr. Dunn

No record is kept of the religion of members of the RUC, and applicants are not asked to disclose their religion. It is, therefore, not possible to provide the precise information requested.
