HC Deb 22 November 1976 vol 919 c972W
Mr. Carter-Jones

asked the Secretary of State for Trade what consultations he has had with organisations such as the Oxford Street Traders' Association regarding the amount of goods purchased by overseas visitors over the past 12 months; to what extent these figures can be broken down into British or foreign manufacture; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Meacher,

pursuant to his reply [Official Report, 15th November 1976; Vol. 919, c. 392], gave the following information:

The Oxford Street Association has held discussions with my Department about its proposed Festival of British Shopping next year which is intended to boost sales of British goods to home and foreign shoppers. Some limited information about the expenditure on shopping in London by overseas visitors is contained in the Survey Among Visitors to London Survey 1975; but it is not possible to distinguish between purchases of goods of British or foreign manufacture.
